Research & Development - About Us

The VA Ann Arbor Research Service supports the research activities of over 150 research investigators located in Ann Arbor, Saginaw, and Battle Creek. Our facilities include forty thousand square feet of laboratory space, a seven thousand square foot animal facility, and updated Facilities with a new research clinic offering exam rooms, interview space, and offices for clinical research staff. The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System is affiliated with the world-class University of Michigan.

The Research Service includes support of the VAAAHS Clinical Research Center (CRC), the VA Center for Clinical Research Management (CCMR) and associated Health Services Research Center of Innovation, The VA Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), Serious Mental Health Treatment Research and Evaluation Center (SMITREC) and the Veterans Education and Research Association of Michigan (VERAM) in the conduct of our research. The VA Ann Arbor Research Service also provides oversight support to the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, Mi., and the Battle Creek VA Medical Center.


Veterans Education and Research Association of Michigan (VERAM)

VERAM is one of 83 VA Affiliated Nonprofit Program Corporations (NPC). NPCs are authorized by Title 38 (§§ 7361 through 7366, United States Code) and allow VAs to accept and administer funds from non-VA federal agencies and private industry to support approved VA research and education. VERAM was incorporated in 1991 and its mission is to facilitate collaboration between AAVAHS and other institutions in order to advance the health and well-being of our country's veterans through medical research and education.

VAAAHS Clinical Research Center (CRC)

The VAAAHS Clinical Research Center (CRC) functions within the Research Service under the leadership of the ACOS for Research and the Executive Director for VERAM to facilitate the conduct of high-quality, mission-relevant clinical research by VAAAHS researchers at the VA Ann Arbor Health System.

VA Center for Clinical Management Research (CCMR)

VA Center for Clinical Management Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan combines the expertise of clinicians and scientists from the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the University of Michigan and partners with clinical leaders and managers to implement and evaluate different ways to make health care safer, more effective and more affordable.

Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC)

The Ann Arbor GRECC research agenda includes basic, clinical, rehabilitation and health services research with a focus on development of neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases in Long Term Care, and gait & balance in the elderly. GRECC faculty provide leadership to a number of NIH fundedUniversity of Michigan (UM) Centers relevant to these foci including the Older American Independence Center (OAIC), Udall Center for Parkinson's Research, the Alzhemer's Disease Core Center and Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (UM CTSI).

Serious Mental Health Treatment Research and Evaluation Center (SMITREC)

The Serious Mental Illness Treatment Resource and Evaluation Center (SMITREC) is a national program evaluation center in the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Mental Health Operations. Faculty in the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry contribute to improvements in mental health services for Veterans.
